I have a few questions I would love some answers to.... please read on and either comment or email me if you have any answers for me.
*I know that there are lots and lots of places I can send blank cards to for charities and for soldiers and things like that. Does anyone know of an organization or person I can send cards to that require the fronts cut off and placed on to a new card? I have a big box full of cards I'd love to donate but I don't have the time or resources available to remount the cards. I'd prefer a Canadian option, but would really just like a way to share these cards with those who need it.
*I keep hearing about people blending their Prismacolor Pencils with "gamsol". I know I can use odourless mineral spirits instead of the gamsol, but I can't find that in any of the stores near me either. Is there something else I could try?
Thanks for trying to help me out!!
I can't help you with the first question, but I think I can answer the second one. Gamsol is odorless mineral spirits. Here are two Canadian online stores that sell it: http://www.wyndhamartsupplies.com/isapi/isapi.dll?product_detail&product_id=5153&search_type=search

Asela has a great tutorial on blending colored pencils: http://hopartstudios.typepad.com/hop_art_studios/2007/02/prismacolor_lay.html
Hope this helps!
I have not tried it myself, but I've seen lots of posts where people say they use baby oil with the same results!
ReplyDeleteI bought odorloess mineral spirits from Michael's in the art aisle. It's a small brown glass jar with a white & blue label.
ReplyDeleteIf you find a place that takes card fronts let me know!
Nancy, I know the Children's Hospital takes scrapbooking items that you are not going to use. Scrapbookers Paradise takes your donation to the hospital. May be give them a call and see if the family's make cards also.
ReplyDeleteThe Ronald Mcdonald House in Calgary also takes cards, not sure if they are set up to remount them. Susan Bruyn would be the best person to ask.
nice set! those chairs look very comfy

ReplyDeleteLook for this bottle at Micheals-it comes in different sizes. It will last you forever. Gamsol is a brand like Mona Lisa is a brand-they are the same thing. Try a fine art store or call the local college art department and they will tell you if you cant find it. I have heard some use Endust too.
There are lots of place selling mineral spirits-Lowes, HOme Depot, Walmart. But you need to look for it because most of the employees are not swift and wont know what you want. Open the lid and sniff it. if it stinks, put it back. Or do a google search for odorless mineral spirits and thousands of hits show up. Even Amazon carried it. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_i_1/102-9092997-4121746?ie=UTF8&rs=&keywords=odorless%20mineral%20spirits&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Aodorless%20mineral%20spirits%2Ci%3Agarden
Hi Nancy,
ReplyDeleteRegarding Gamsol, I purchased "Mona Lisa Brush Cleaner" from Michaels - it is 100% odorless mineral spirits. Next time I am going to purchase it at Home Depot - they have mineral spirits (huge bottle for $4-$6). I bought the Michaels one 3-years ago and it is not even half empty. Sene me an email if you need more info.
I walked into Wal-Mart, painting section and bought a bottle of Oderless Mineral Spirits for $5.00 and I'm sure I'll have enough for the next 10 years!!!! I then bought a GLASS container from Gina K's Design web store...The container is a bit costly BUT WORTH EVERY PENNY...I tried cheaper versions and they FAILED miserably!!! Hope this helps!!
ReplyDeleteHi Nancy,
ReplyDeleteI bought my odourless mineral spirits from Currys store. Here is the link: http://www.currys.com/mediums/prodinfo2.asp?SubcatID=4052&catID=1
It is called Taltine odourless mineral spirits. Also, if you watch you can get a great deal on prismacolor pencils.
Don't you have walmart or a paint store? I found my odorless mineral spirits in the paint dept of walmart
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure, but Keiki Cards might take card fronts, you can email them and find out.

About card fronts, I do card front swaps and all the extras go to some local groups here in the Fredericton, NB area. I would mount them and send them out. This year is the first time I'm going to be doing it. I have about 50-100 already and always looking for more to help.
ReplyDeleteCan you use the Prismacolour Scholar pencils with the mineral spirits?
